Guardian homes allow our beautiful breeding girls to live at home with you in a family environment and have all the love and attention they deserve.
We value ethical breeding first and foremost. To us, this means breeding girls have very limited litters. We don’t believe in over-breeding our dogs as having puppies is hard work, and they deserve a rest too!
What’s involved in being a Guardian?
Taking on a guardian pup is a special experience, but there are some important things to remember. We try to leave you be and be as least intrusive as possible to enjoy your dog as though they were a typical pet.
At around 12 months, we will have your puppy hip and elbow scored at Vineyard vet which is a short procedure for approximately one hour.
We ask you to let us know when the puppy has her first heat - we then typically expect her second to follow around 6 months later. This is when she will be mated for the first time.
Hawkesbury Groodles retains ownership of your pup for the duration of the breeding contract. Our Guardian pups have up to 3 litters. Then they are desexed, and ownership is transferred to you and your family. This generally happens by 4 years of age.
What is the cost for me?
As a Guardian, any day-to-day costs for the dog are your responsibility, and any breeding related expenses are ours. Guardian parents must live within an hour of Sydney, to allow for breeding related appointments at our trusted vet in Vineyard, NSW.
How does the pregnancy work?
During your dog’s second heat, we will pick her up to be inseminated. This is usually done over a day or two, then she returns home to you. Dogs are pregnant for about 8 weeks. Around week 7, she will come to stay with us to have her puppies. She will stay with us until she is finished weaning her pups - this generally occurs at around 6 weeks after their birth, meaning you are away from your dog for around 7 weeks.
How much are Guardian dogs?
Hawkesbury Groodles guardian pups are offered to special homes with dedicated families at the substantially reduced price of $500. We select the puppy based on temperament, structure and coat characteristics for our breeding program. We do expect that the reduction in price means guardians will invest in training and socialisation of their pup as this is critical to their development.
Is this right for me and my family?
This isn’t for everyone, but it is a truly special experience. We will work closely together to ensure the health of your dog, and you must be willing to commit to the terms of the contract, including providing access to your dog when she is ready to breed. Many families enjoy having a pregnant dog at home and watching the babies move around her belly, and often end up with one of her pups as a companion for their dog!
What support will I get?
We dearly value our Guardian parents and will remain in touch with you to support you and your family every step of the way.
If you think you might be interested in taking on this very important role, please get in touch with us to discuss further.
